5 fall 2017 fashion trends that are worth a look

Ready or not, the first rollout of the fall fashion season has hit most retail floors. If you were born in the 1970s like I was, it will be a trip down memory lane for you. To help you navigate what trends are new and what trends will be rolling over from summer, here's a fall forecast guide, starting with trends you may already have. RUFFLES If you love ruffles you're in luck; they are going nowhere fast. You're going to continue to see them on blouses and sweaters and also on shoes, jackets, skirts – you get the drift. It's a great style element if you love a feminine look. If you don't love ruffles, refer to my next rollover trend. Personal stylist tip: The trick to wearing ruffles in a flattering way is to wear an item with the ruffles in a place where you don't mind more volume and attention. For example, if you don't love your arms, then refrain from wearing ruffled sleeves. Choose instead some sneakers with a cute ruffle across them. GRAY BOOTIES Th...

The Power of Social Audiences on Fashion and Beauty Brands

It's a sunny Saturday morning in July, and the sidewalks of downtown NoLIta in New York are heaving with a sea of people that snakes around four blocks. YouTube sensation Logan Paul is making an appearance at a pop-up shop on Mulberry Street, and Paul's devoted fans are waiting hours for a photo with the social media star, and an opportunity to snap up some Maverick fashion merchandise. We live in the era of The Influencer. Where social "celebrities" are surpassing actors and recording artists for endorsement deals and appearance opportunities — particularly in the fashion and beauty industries. Paul, a 22-year-old who shot to stardom after posting slapstick videos to the now defunct social platform Vine, has more than 13.6 million followers on Instagram alone. An impressive figure when compared to A-listers such as Chris Hemsworth, who has 11 million. These seemingly "regular" people are the ambassadors du jour for fashion and beauty brands — the reach an...

This space fashion simply sends us into orbit

The fashion industry is discovering what we in Florida have known for decades: Space is hot. Or should that be haute? "Space is the new black," said menswear designer Nick Graham, who introduced his "Life on Mars" collection during Men's Fashion Week in January. Along with chiseled-jawed models in metallic sharkskin suits, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Bill Nye the Science Guy walked the runway during the New York show. Graham's not the only one to enter the fashion space race. The June/July 150th anniversary edition of Harper's Bazaar features a "Gigi Hadid's Space Odyssey" spread shot at Kennedy Space Center. Coach has launched a line of NASA-inspired handbags, jackets, T-shirts and accessories. New York-based designer Vivienne Tam used the NASA logo in her spring/summer 2017 collection. "Chanel did a space-themed show two weeks after mine," Graham said via email, "so I guess Karl Lagerfeld is on the same wavelength...

How the Bristol Sessions Created Country Music

Image
During two weeks in 1927, a group of singers gathered at a recording studio in a renovated hat warehouse in Bristol, Tennessee. Johnny Cash once called what happened next "the single most important event in the history of country music." The Bristol Sessions were innovative in a number of ways, and they helped to change the popular music landscape forever. Present for the recording sessions were a number of performers who would go down in the history of country music–the Carter Family, Ernest Stoneman and Jimmie Rodgers, among others. They travelled from the area surrounding Bristol to record with the Victor Talking Machine Company's music producer Ralph Peer, who had put ads in the newspaper looking for "hillbilly music" singers. Writing for the National Recording Registry, Ted Olson describes "hillbilly music" as "a catch-all term for much of the white folk and popular music composed and performed in the southern United States." The name ...
